The Chakra system and it's mind to body applied learning.

Quite a few years ago, I really found interest and depth in a three day intensive course with Anodea Judith who’s studies and teachings lead her to publish her book Eastern Body Western Mind, the Chakra system as a Path to the Self. Offering lessons on and off the mat, the chakra system and a knowledge of it, can permeate our understandings of ourselves.

The chakra system seems a natural topic of yoga philosophy to offer in our one the one training together. Along with an introduction to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, our yoga teacher training will look at the theory and potential postures to balance each of the chakras.

So what are the chakras?

Yogic philosophy believes the chakras are spinning vortexes of energy residing along the length of the spine as energy centres than pertain to different aspects of ourselves.

  • Muladhara resides the bases of the spine and governs a solid root and our connection to the earth and our energy body.

  • Svadisthana sits at the sacrum and is the centre of oneself.

  • Manipura at the solar plexus absorbs energy from the sun and governs our digestion.

  • Anahata at the heart is our centre that allows us to love and to be loved.

  • Vishuddi at the throat governs our abilities to communicate effectively, to speak truthfully and to listen honestly.

  • Ajna resides at the space between the eye brows is our centre of perception and intuition.

  • Sahasrara at the crown of the head is our connection to the divine.

Each chakras' ideal state is 'balance' but very often they can be out of alignment, either spinning too fast (excessively) or too slow (deficiently.) It is also argued that each chakra is developed in synchronicity with our early life development. We can also balance our chakras through intention, Audra, meditation and movement. Which is why, when we learn with our bodies as well as our minds, the information is fully integrated into our understanding. So during our training, we will apply the theoretical teachings of the chakras into a practice on the mat.

This is a very basic introduction to the chakra system and to some of the theory covered in our syllabus together and to learn more about how this may appeal to you and get in touch.

Best wishes, Lucy
